to make water safety an essential right for all, to save lives, and to create a more inclusive recreation community.
In 2023, we successfully advocated for a suite of bills passed by the City Council that would allow for free swimming lessons for children age 13 and younger, identify new locations for public pools and better utilize NYC Department of Education pools, and require reporting and transparency on lifeguard training and staffing for the city’s beaches and pools.
In 2024, a separate bill that we developed with Council Member Selvena Brooks-Powers that would require the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene to report on all drowning deaths that occur in the city was passed by the City Council.
