ADVOCACY & POLICY

Our Mission

to make water safety an essential right for all, to save lives, and to create a more inclusive recreation community.

New York State Legislation

We have developed with Assembly Member Stacey Pheffer Amato and Senator Joseph P. Addabo and strongly support Senate Bill S2545A and Assembly Bill A4846, that allows schools to provide water safety instruction to students in grades kindergarten through twelve.

New York City Legislation

In 2023, we successfully advocated for a suite of bills passed by the City Council that would allow for free swimming lessons for children age 13 and younger, identify new locations for public pools and better utilize NYC Department of Education pools, and require reporting and transparency on lifeguard training and staffing for the city’s beaches and pools.

In 2024, a separate bill that we developed with Council Member Selvena Brooks-Powers that would require the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene to report on all drowning deaths that occur in the city was passed by the City Council.
