The Water Safety Coalition is a collaborative force united by a single vision: water safety as a fundamental right. We are humanitarian advocates that are residents, community activists, non-profit champions, and local businesses devoted to ensuring that New York City —and all of New York—thrives through a culture of safe and inclusive water-based recreation and education.We focus on making the maximum positive impact by tackling the inequities at the root of the issue - the inaccessibility and lack of water safety education and policy -which allows us to cultivate more inclusivity and justice in water recreation and ocean conservation communities.

Our History
Founded in 2021 by non-profit groups working on the Rockaway Peninsula in New York City. The Rockaway Peninsula is on the edge of NYC, with the 18,000 acre estuary of Jamaica Bay on one side and the Atlantic Ocean on the other. Multiple drownings occur on the peninsula each year, with hundreds of life-saving and water-based accidents occ
Founded in 2021 by non-profit groups working on the Rockaway Peninsula in New York City. The Rockaway Peninsula is on the edge of NYC, with the 18,000 acre estuary of Jamaica Bay on one side and the Atlantic Ocean on the other. Multiple drownings occur on the peninsula each year, with hundreds of life-saving and water-based accidents occurring along the Rockaway shoreline. This sobering reality inspired our group to take action and work with elected officials to develop policies and strategies that could turn the tide on drowning across New York City and New York State. Our member groups work across New York City and our work is focused on citywide and New York state based advocacy, policy, education, and programming.

The Water Safety Coalition is a group of concerned citizens, community groups, and non-profit organizations that are working to make water safety an essential right for all, to save lives, and to create a more inclusive recreation community.
